The simplified Chinese characters are standardized Chinese characters and were promoted for use in mainland China since the 1950s to encourage literacy. Currently, around 1,2 billion people speak Chinese world wide, 910 million of which speak Mandarin. Mandarin is by far the largest of the Chinese dialect groups and is spoken by 70 per cent of all Chinese speakers.
